"Why is it that beauty is so often skin-deep?"

{{ The Creep, The Unpredictable }} |
Creepy is incredibly opinionated. Some people may find his looks to be creepy. The mouths on the neck, his ever-bleeding eyes or his attitude could all be things that cause people to find him creepy. This effects animals as well as humans. Despite him trying to convince the creatures that can understand him that he really causes no harm, begging at times for others to believe him, they often run in fear. Fauna was the first to give him a chance. Never having been around others, she was scared of him at first, but since she was new to everything, she quickly got used to him. His temper does frighten her at times, but he's learned that by talking about his thoughts, he feels a bit better. His conversation skills are quite polished, though have a tendency to fail at a moment's notice. Still, he rarely gets the chance to use them, as many find him too scary. Even if they do stay around, they tend to leave quite soon after on basis that he gets creepier with time. His wandering eyes, the blood that rarely stops. He knows that his looks are unsettling at the least, but he still has a quiet hope that the world will become less based on appearance. Fauna is one of the few that have given him a chance, and he hopes there are others like her.

❤ Why So Many Critters? ❤ |
Fauna is a beautiful sight. She's a truly pretty young thing, being many different things combined and then further groomed to perfection. Not only is it on the outside, it's within as well. A group of curious scientists gathered one night discussing the slicing of DNA to create new creatures for different purposes. A horse mixed with an ox would make for a strong, loyal and fast creature. Deciding they didn't want to risk something so large nor something dangerous, they thought for a long while about what creatures they could combine to make something beautiful and harmless. A maned hyena, chihuahua and some other undisclosed creatures were brought into the lab. The researchers worked tediously to find a way to safely extract the DNA. After only a few animal casualties, they discovered a solution and began figuring how to mix them. Again, there was a pause before anything happened. They meticulously studied reproduction of the certain animals and how different species and breeds were successful in creating children. Ligers and tigons, for example, were heavily looked at. In the wild, it seems as though those creatures wouldn't be able to mate, but sometimes they defied logic. While they couldn't get all these gathered creatures to mate, they could look at how the DNA acted together. A breakthrough late one night allowed them to begin the process of mixing and proceeding to inject a carrier to raise the baby. Long and painful hours were spent on projects that didn't turn out as planned. Some were stupid, some ugly. The scientists worked on and off for years. They worked in a lab, so they were expected to work on other things, but their obsession with creating a creature, one they would name Fauna since so many animals were involved, led them to spend most all of their free time on the project. Their outside relationships fizzled. Some members weren't as dedicated and either quit or spread their time more evenly. However, it became their entirety to finish this project. A drowsy day in August caused a beautiful female to be birthed. There were no others in her litter, which had been the first clue she would grow to be their gem. Most the time, the DNA just split and they had several weird looking creatures that took mostly after one parent. After a few months, everyone knew this was Fauna - this was who they had been trying so long to create. However, they didn't know what to do with her now. They began fighting. At some point, things got violent. After all, these people were not sane of mind. Most let their lives slip away to create a creature they had no clue what to do with. Those who had a sliver of sense left quickly vacated. Eventually, the crazy ones found a solution in which Fauna overheard and understood. They were going to make beds out of their belongings and if she slept on one of them, the owner of that pile would become her sole caretaker while the others worked on furthering the experiment. A beautiful scarf lie atop one of them. While she had no intention of staying here, fearful of what they would do, she slipped it on and tied another piece of fabric around her wrist. She looked in a window and saw her reflection. Now she was happy with her appearance and ready to leave.

{{ THE CREEP, THE UNPREDICTABLE }} |
Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental disorder which causes long-term patterns of unstable emotions. These inner emotions often cause the sufferer to act impulsively and have rather chaotic relationships with others. Abandonment as a child, disrupted family life, poor communication within the family and abuse can all be risk factors. In Harlen's case, abandonment is the cause of this. Those with BPD are often rather uncertain about their identity, leading to rapidly changing interests and values. They also tend to see things as one extreme, either good or bad. Views of others can change often, and suddenly as well. One day, they may look up to someone, and the next, they consider the other to be complete scum. This often causes intense and very unstable relationships. They may also have an intense fear of being alone, as well as not being able to tolerate it if that happens. Boredom and emptiness are frequent thoughts as well. They also display anger quite often, sometimes rather inappropriately. As stated previously, the worst symptom for sufferers like Harlen is impulsiveness. The final symptom is repeated crisis and self-injury. Depression is another complication that comes with this disease.

Fauna is beautiful and most certainly understands this. She's not modest nor cocky. Simply, she understands that she is stunning but doesn't use it in anyway. She accepts compliments but always returns them. This shows her inner beauty, kindness unmatched by any other creature of her decent. Most are regretful, but she feels blessed. She's a great support system as well. Harlen struggles with his BPD, so she constantly tells him he's doing better, but only when he really is. If he's falling short, she gives him advice to guide him back to where he wants to be mentally. She always listens to him and does her best to comfort him in rough times. He gets discouraged when they have no visitors, so sometimes she'll find someone. Drawing them in with her beauty, she'll invite them to meet her companion. She warns them that he is a bit scary, but he's no threat. Her way with words almost always brings them to return to where he his. By some means, she has convinced some to stay and give him a nice conversation, but they rarely stay too long. She feels bad but keeps hopeful they'll find someone that will stick with them and befriend him. At times, she worries he feels like he's scared them off, but she never straight up asks. Her charisma allows her to casually say that they had something to do or that he did well in socializing with them. The most notable thing about her is that she loves beauty. She loves anything that shines, and especially loves Harlen. He's her best friend and it's for one simple reason; she sees potential. Seeing him grow fills her with pride. She's unsure as to whether she can have pups, and while she's always wanted them, she feels that she would rather just spend her time with her friend. Beauty to Fauna is as much, if not more, your heart then your looks. This is what truly makes her beautiful.

Harlen is truthfully a little scaredy cat. The slightest noise can make him jump, and while he can usually get up the courage to check on it, his heart is often pounding rather rapidly. The cuts on his neck that he uses as extra mouths are put in great strain when he begins to fight. To prevent excess bleeding, he prefers to just hide. He doesn't like fighting nor running. This makes him little of a threat. It's at times like these that he feels lucky for his looks, as many predators will turn and flee upon seeing him. A scary look can cause others to fear for their lives, even if in no real danger. His second quirk is that he dislikes looking in reflective surfaces. Harlen would much rather live life pretending he looks normal than have to come to terms with the fact that he's far from it. His eyes wander and look sad and lost most the time. He doesn't mind using his other mouths, and actually loves using them, but the visual is something he just doesn't want to face. Things like water seem to make him look scarier too. He doesn't want to feel scary, and with Fauna by his side, he usually doesn't.

Fauna peered behind desks and paced along the wall to try to find an exit. The lab seemed incredibly lacking of imperfections. Floorboards were shiny, the corners had exceptional cocking and the windows were all away from where her pen had been. But now there was no pen, and they seemed to have forgotten that. The windows were open to bring fresh air to their creation. There was a storm window, but there was their weakness. They hadn't taken her ability to jump into consideration. It seemed she could leap no more than the average dog of her size, but she never displayed that before them. Calmly, as though someone were watching her, she headed for the desk chair. There, she hopped on the chair and stared at the large screen in front of her. After jumping up to the desktop, she made her way carefully around things, stepping over them to prevent any sign of how she'd escape. While she didn't doubt they were surveying her, she knew they would spend a long time looking for her. They would likely search around the area as well. There was nothing she could do about that, but that was the reason she started looking around so quickly. She'd done a bit while they were still here, but that only went so far. At the window, Fauna saw things that confused her. Tall trees that rose almost as high as the building. Grass that was far overgrown. She clawed at the window while trying to figure out a way to get down. Her feet began to hurt as she wore the nails down, the ache throbbing in her entire paw. She lied on her stomach and began using her nose to work at the wire. Eventually, a hole just large enough to fit her was there, and she took it. The sharp edges scraped her side but not enough to damage her skin. She wasn't as fragile as the doctors assumed. Out the window, she tumbled down to a fire escape. It was a short drop but left her dazed. There were stairs going down. She was on the top floor of a rather tall building. Unable to find an alternative, she started down the steps. It was a slow process. She lowered her front paws down and moved her backside around as quickly as possible. Her paw was slightly bloody, the claws having been worn down quite a lot. This caused her to change her methods, hoping to leave as little trace of her escape as possible. She would lower her back legs first, then slowly move her forelegs to the next step. In truth, it did very little to prevent the small spots of blood she left, but it made her feel better. By the end of her journey down the stairs, her feet were feeling a bit better. However, now there was problem. The stairs dropped of into a dumpster. She thought of this as rather faulty design, despite that a human could easily make the jump down. Summoning all the energy she had, she took a leap towards the far side, which was open and had just enough trash to comfort her.

A quiet breeze rolled through the countryside. The gentle swishing of trees gave Harlen a calm feeling. He was feeling happy on this particular day. At least, happier than usual. Nothing had made him angry for a fair time. For once, he was enjoyed solitude. When he came across a dirt road, he decided he would follow it. Some of the homes had cool displays in their yards. They also may have some leftover food somewhere. He tried to peer ahead for a look into what he was headed towards, but it was too dark. The moon was full but covered by a cloud. Continuing down the road for awhile, Harlen grew tired of it. He didn't know how far it went. As he was about to veer away, he heard a soft sound of feet hitting metal. Normally he would have disregarded it, but curiosity got the best of him. He headed for where the sound came from. A small, strange looking creature was coming down a rusty fire escape. He didn't see too many animals, it was true, but there was something refreshingly different about this one. It came to a sudden stop, backed up and took a leap. Alarmed, he ran in it's direction. The critter had landed in the dumpster. Muffled cries for help echoed from within. Harlen, being a very large individual, took a running leap and made it to the top of the dumpster with ease. Now he had to make a decision. His paws were large and a bit clumsy, but his face would scare whatever was in there.
He opted to scare them. Even if they were terrified, at least they'd be safe. He dove his face in and found a bit of fluff, with some sort of fabric covering the scruff. He nosed it out of the way and lifted the creature as gently as he could. It was kicking and flailing. Once Harlen had it to where he could see it, he had to examine it a bit to see if that was really an animal. The movement of it made him realize that yes, this was a living organism. He jumped off the dumpster and placed it on the ground. She stared up at him with wide eyes. Yet, it wasn't a look of terror... it was a looking of surprise. "Wow, you're really big." she said breathlessly. Now Harlen wore a look of surprise. "Y-yes, I suppose I am." he stumbled slightly. Her voice was gentle and full of childish awe. His was full of shock. "Who are you?" she asked, trying to stretch her neck to get a better view of him. He sat and hunkered a bit so that she could see him. It would be painful for them to get along so well only to have her panic and run off in the daylight. "I'm Harlen," he replied. "Who are you?"
"I'm... Fauna, yes, that's what they called me." she replied with a small smile. Harlen thought about who they could be. When no good explanations came, he asked her. She didn't really know much. "The people that made me. They always said something about Fauna when around me, and would say Fauna if they wanted me to look at them or go to them. But I'm leaving them, I'm tired of their arguing." was her response.Harlen stared at her while contemplating what that meant. He knew that it meant she was pet. Although, he didn't understand how they made her. He decided he would ask her some other time, if he saw her again. They talked about each other for awhile until Harlen decided to make a deal. "So, you're leaving those p-people, right?" he asked, scorning his lack of social skills.
"Yes, I am."
"You're going to need protection, won't you? Someone like you wouldn't be able to make it alone in a world like this."
"Someone like me?"
"Not to offend but you, you're delicate."
"I am not, I made it all the way down those stairs!"
"You also had to have someone fish you out of the garbage."
A brief silence fell between the two of them, Harlen's mind reeling of ways to keep her with him.
"That's not the point though..." he tried to find a way to finish his sentence.
"Then what is?"
"I mean, you'll need someone to show you how to survive."
She looked contemplative.
"You grew up with someone caring for you, you can't just go off alone after that."
"Yes, I suppose you're right. What's the first part of living out here?"
"We'll need a place to stay for tonight, I'll show you how to choose a good den site and then how to hunt."
They nodded in mutual agreement. As they headed off for her first lesson, Harlen warned her that she may not like him in the morning. She asked why and he explained his looks to the best of his abilities. A small laugh had escaped her lips and she assured him that she wasn't going anywhere. He was incredibly grateful. As promised, he would show her how to survive. He would show her a different den-building technique every night based on whatever new surroundings they were in. They traveled, after all. He did the same for hunting, though often did that in the day. She was small and it made her an excellent hunter.
